The varsity wrestling competed in the team state finals on Friday at Mt. Pleasant. Unfortunately, the Pine River squad seeded second was able to flip the score from the first time these two teams met and hand the Redskins a 31-29 loss. The dual meet started at 140 and Pine River opened with a pin. Senior captain Jake Phillips answered with a 9-5 decision win. Eathan Hicks went to the mat at 152 and secured a second straight Clinton win to tie the score at 6-6. Pine River was able to answer with a win at 160 and a pin at 171 to make the score 6-15. Austin Popp won a major decision at 189 16-4 and Josh Brown helped close the gap with a major decision of his own 15-4 and Clinton was back in it at 14-15. Pine River, once again, was able to answer with close wins at heavyweight and 103 to extend their lead back to 14-21. Christian Minard was able to beat the returning 5th place finisher last year 7-2 and then Noah Comar gave the Redskins their only lead of the dual with a pin in 4:36 to make the score 23-21 Redskins. Pine River came back with a pin and major decision to put the dual out of reach with one match to go at 23-31. Fletcher Mellinger finished the scoring with a pin in 2:39 to make the final margin 29-31. The Redskins finish the season with a 28-8 record and tie the deepest tournament run for the wrestling team. We want to thank the seniors for their 4 years of hard work and for their part in getting this team to this point. With 9 underclassmen in the lineup this team is in good shape to contend again next year. For now 8 Redskins with participate in the individual finals held at the Palace in Auburn hills this Thursday- Saturday. Those competing are Christian Minard, Noah Comar, Anthony Stockdale, Fletcher Mellinger, Jake Phillips, Trent Sexton, Austin Popp, and Josh Brown.
